PERSONAL LIFE

A) General Overview:

Q: Did you experience anything significant of an inner/outer nature  which was ‘out of the ordinary run of life’ during this time? (Bear in mind that any planetary energy can strike a ‘dumb note’ with you, but be vividly observable in the life/lives of family or and/or friends and/or significant others)

1 = Very Much So/ 2 = Moderately So/ 3 =  Mildly So/4 = Not at All

Eve”(51) : 2

“Alicia” (53) : 1

“Kathy” (54) : 1 (AND NONE OF IT WAS NICE)

B)  Summary of the most significant facets of this time:

(Can you relate the astrological significators I have set out to what your diaries tell you? eg to particularly important events/occurrences/shifts of understanding or perception which cast things in a new light, etc. If you can’t be that specific, do not worry! Just provide what seems relevant to you )

I was off from work until Oct. 6th 2010, recuperating from my tendonitis, bursitis and shoulder impingement.  Since the initial injury on August 18th, I have had continuously pain in my left shoulder.

My elderly Aunt’s mental health has stabilized since this summers realization that she has dementia. My cousin has moved in to live with her and she now has a companion full time.

We had more restructuring at the Post Office where I work and have worked for thirty years. There were more consolidation of jobs, bringing additional duties to everyone in the workplace.  On January 7th three days after the last conjunction, the new Postmaster General announced a reduction in force and a voluntary early retirement in the wake of billions of dollars in losses.

Could this Pluto/Saturn restructure cause me to gain an early retirement?  Or, will I be destined to have shoulder surgery and endure three more years, until I reach minimum retirement age of 55. Stay Tuned….

Alicia (53)

Jupiter rules my fourth house.  My entire household has been in upheaval due to the fall out from my father’s death in August.  My mother moved in with me, and there have been many adjustments and surprises along the way.  We are discussing moving away from this area, which I have mixed feelings about.

One of the things I have had to come to terms with during this period is that my life is very different now (compared to pre-transit)—I’m now successfully free-lancing full time, which causes adjustments of its own.  From the time Jupiter turned direct, I’ve had a slew of clients, almost too many to keep up with.  Jupiter is conjunct a 12th house Sun and Uranus is conjunct an 11th house Moon in my chart, and I feel very strongly that this transit has created a bridge between my past and my future—life makes sense now, suddenly, and for many years, it hasn’t.  The Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in Aries falls opposite my Mercury, which rules my 10th and my first house.  Both my sense of self and my professional life got the Jupiter/Uranus zap.  When Mercury entered Capricorn, it seemed as if, finally, all the pieces fell into place.

My niece, who was on the brink of death last summer when the transit was on her Mars, has undergone a radical personality change (for the better).  Seems as if she has embraced her life in a new way.

Kathy (54)

Everything so sweet and cuddly with Vertex (Ed: Kathy’s Ex) when Mercury entered Libra but then, Venus hit my Moon in 4th house to go retrograde on the Moon 8 Oct (and then to turn direct on my 4th house Neptune in the last degree of Libra 18 Nov), and the whole relationship changed shape. Now I think it’s over. Horrible 6 weeks. My lovely ex became an ex-ex.

11 October I received a letter from the tax man. They are asking me to pay € 7500 in back taxes. This is a complete mess. I really hated this Venus R in my 4th.

14 November, 2010: Major tooth problem (I blame Pluto hovering at the cusp of my Saturn ruled 6th house and digging up all kinds of stuff).

30 November, 2010 declaration of love from Vertex, out of the blue. Uranus SD 26 Pisces 41 (my 9th) sextile my Sun/Moon 26 Capricorn 26 (my 6th) and approaching, once more, conjunction with his Sun/Moon 29 Pisces 52 in 1st house. Mercury into Capricorn the next day.

5 December, 2010: Realized my sister’s health has deteriorated rapidly.

7 December, 2010: Technical problems with the central heating in our building, dry and hot like Sahara desert. Lost voice completely, fell sick.

13 December, 2010: Took a knife in my hand and let the Freon out from the fridge. I was hoping for a red sports car to transform my daily life. Mars/Mercury/Pluto conjunction in 6th. I think this was really funny: the planets showed me their versatility.

17 December, 2010: A dear friend went into hospital after losing suddenly the sight of one eye.

20-23 Dec, 2010: On sick-leave (I am the healthiest person on earth, or was until recently).

24 December, 2010: More bad news about the health of my friend’s husband in Cyprus. He desperately needs a 3rd kidney transplant but he is too sick to go through the operation.
WHY IS EVERYBODY’S HEALTH AFFECTED IN SUCH A WAY?

5 January, 2011    My dream (I think this was very extraordinary indeed) the night after the Solar Eclipse and New Moon in 6th, and Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in 9th (27 Pisces):
We were at some airport: me, Vertex and some lady unknown to me but clearly known to him, probably his secretary I thought.  He was very boisterous, also flirting heavily with the other lady.  Then he approached me in a hasty way and gave me a plastic bag full of connectors/adaptors. After that he escaped from the sight.
I woke up and knew instantly what the dream was telling me: in November Vertex went to Istanbul (for real I mean) for a medical conference. In his mail he said “we” are going to Istanbul. I didn’t ask who “we” is because at that stage I had no interest whatsoever regarding his activities.  Now I know as surely as he told me himself that the “we” was the secretary Eleni and him and that they slept together during the trip.
I finally made the connection, thanks to Jupiter and Uranus activating (again) the Mercury at AP in 9th house – Uranus in 12th – Saturn in 5th triangle.
That’s it. The end.

10 January, 2011    IRS wants all of € 7500. That is my 3 months’ net income. I don’t know what to do about this.

NOTE: I will be sending out the Final Questionnaire in mid-March 2011, asking my ten researchees for their brief summary of Spring 2010 – 2011.

I will be asking them to evaluate the significance of the above year relative to other years in life ( in as much as one can!) and whether the Jupiter/Uranus effect  (which I will briefly re-define) was in their opinion able to be seen – or not.

Waiting for Jupiter/Uranus 3 as the old year wanes….

The third and final conjunction of Jupiter and Uranus – at 27 Pisces – takes place on the 4th January 2011. On 22.1.11 , Jupiter re-enters Aries, with Uranus re-entering Aries on 13.3.11. From an applying orb of 10 degrees in March 2010, to the separating orb of 10 degrees in mid March 2011 when Uranus will be at 0 deg Aries and Jupiter 10 deg Aries, it will have been some year, both for our world and for individuals ‘plugged-in’ to the conjunction’s 27 Pisces – 0 Aries “Hot spot”!

Jupiter/Uranus has an E.T. moment….the highlight of 2010/11?

Recently, NASA announced that its Kepler probe had found more than 700 suspected new planets, including up to 140 of similar size to planet Earth. This was from a trawl of, wait for it, only 150,000 stars: a mere fraction of the estimated 100 billion which lie in our home galaxy, the Milky Way. When aliens arrive on Earth, an increasingly likely prospect if many eminent people in the know including Stephen Hawking are to be believed, they clearly have the right to an official Earthling for greeting purposes.

The Pope? President Obama? The leader of the European Union? The President of Russia or China? Richard Dawkins?

No, none of the above. And definitely not a task to be entrusted to a man. I heard the great news on the radio last Friday morning, one week after Jupiter Meets Uranus Part 2 occurred on 19.9.10. Our future relationship with planet Zog has just taken a step forward! Yes, the United Nations is to appoint

“an obscure Malaysian astro-physicist who is head of its little-known Office for Outer Space Affairs (Unoosa)” – a lady by the name of Mazlan Othman –

to be the official Greeter for the Purple People

when they first set foot on our illustrious planet.

It took my husband some time to convince me that I had not overstayed my time in the Land of Nod the night before that radio bulletin. I did not quite believe this story until I saw it in black and white in the Sunday newspapers.

It has got to be my personal favourite for the Jupiter/Uranus Quirky Scientific Award for the 2010/11 conjunction.

This news has also taken me a little closer to having my greatest wish for the 2010/11 conjunction fulfilled, as expressed in an interview in the summer of 2009 with the American Federation of Astrologers’ Newsletter:

“….AFA: Do you have a special wish for the human community for something uniquely helpful which could emerge from this powerful and disruptive energy field?

AW: Yes. I would love to see science fiction fantasies over many decades become fact with the arrival on Planet Earth of small but fabulously evolved purple people from Planet Zog to teach us how to mend our ways. Now THAT would be unexpected!!….”

Jupiter meets Uranus 8/6/2010: individual, community, collective….

The “Jupiter meets Uranus” site is taking an exciting turn as we move toward the new conjunction. I have in recent days committed myself (am I mad or what?!!) to doing a follow-up study from the one  I did on the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction of February 1997 “Jupiter meets Uranus – from erotic bathing to star gazing. (UK buyers, click HERE ) Have you got your copy yet?

I am approaching my quota of 20 volunteers who are “plugged-in” to the late mutable/early cardinal energy of  the upcoming Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in Aries, and will be sending me their feedback on how it was for them as the observational year (March 2010 – February 2011) unfolds. It is fantastic that they are prepared to do this – and I will be treating their feedback with appropriate care and confidentiality, as I did the 17 participants in the previous 1997 research. So – keep watching this space to see a research study being invented before your eyes!

And there are still a few more places for volunteers with planets/Angles/ Moon’s Nodes in late mutable/early cardinal signs. Just leave a comment and I will contact you.

I have acquired some interesting and lively commentators, most recently Shana – of  http://www.shanatinglipton.com/blog/. In response to a comment of hers, I have written a short piece on some contemporary events which I thought I’d share with the many readers of this site – in the spirit of “here it is – as it happens.”

Jupiter Meets Uranus

Jupiter Meets Uranus

from Shana June 2, 2010 at 1:03 am Hey Anne and friends,

I dunno if this constitutes the first celebrity Jupiter/Uranus moment but Tipper and Al Gore divorcing after 40 years of marriage seems kind of Uranus. And having his tropical sun sign in Aries (along with transiting Jupiter and Uranus) could make for a milestone moment.

One for the books?

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/01/al-and-tipper-gore-split-up/

from Anne : June 3, 2010 at 12:59 pm Hi Shana

thanks for posting this link. The important point to look for in identifying the action of Jupiter/Uranus, in essence, is that it should bring into being, unexpectedly and usually shockingly, conditions which are entirely new. So we need to focus on that – and the Gore split certainly illustrates J/Uranus energy at work as you say. Gore was also born under the tough Saturn/Pluto conjunction in 1947 just after WW2, and Saturn/Pluto people feel the harsh grind of that combination at each aspect – we are now at the waning square (from the 1982 conjunction) which is part of the Grand Cross pattern with Jupiter/Uranus in Aries. As I put it in another article on this site, written a year ago:

“The Jupiter-Uranus predilection for seeing no limits, leaping before it looks and challenging the established order expressed through the filter of the rash, angry impetuousness of Aries and locked with the harsh, power-driven determination not to budge of the Saturn-Pluto square, offers a difficult and dangerous picture……”
https://jupitermeetsuranus.wordpress.com/2009/10/31/jupiter-meets-uranus-a-few-thoughts-on-the-201011-encounter/

This is validated today with news of the gun massacre of 13 people (including the killer) and the serious injury of many others in Cumbria, England, UK, by an apparently mild-mannered man who broke through any limit of acceptability (Jupiter/Uranus in Aries) and acted out the worst side of the Saturn/Pluto combination – mass murder. (check out Reinhold Ebertin “The Combination of Stellar Influences” (AFA) p188)

And a nation born under Saturn/Pluto – Israel – is currently attracting international condemnation for its treatment of people of goodwill trying to bring humanitarian aid (the plus side of Jupiter/Uranus in Aries) to ordinary citizens suffering under the Gaza blockade.

Here you see an example of the Jupiter/Uranus in Aries energy field, set in its Saturn/Pluto context, operating at three levels at once: the personal, the community, and the wider collective.

“As above, so below” in all its awesome truth….

Update on “Jupiter Meets Uranus” : May 2010

Excitement/apprehension is growing. The powerful, unique planetary energy field building up with the 8 June 2010 Jupiter Uranus conjunction at 0 Aries at its core, is nearing. Another fine review of  the book I wrote about the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in general, and the 1997 one in particular, has just come out:

“As the somewhat-scary Jupiter-Uranus conjunction prepares to burn its way across the sky — scary in part because it’s involved in a huge cardinal T-cross (and occasional grand cross) involving Pluto and Saturn, and bringing in Moon, Venus, and Mars by August 2010) — it would probably be a good thing to attend to what this might mean. The place to go to do that would be this uniquely-researched book which is not only the sole book I know of devoted only to this subject, but the result of a dedicated research project intended to dig out the most of of what it might mean, especially personally..….However you look at it, this is a most timely book to have right now.”

And from The Mountain Astrologer Magazine, April/May 2010,

Review of “Jupiter Meets Uranus: From Erotic Bathing to Star gazing” by Anne Whitaker, American Federation of Astrologers, 6535 Rural Road, Tempe, AZ 85283, 2009. Soft-cover–166pp–$23.95(ISBN 978-0-86690-574-9
by Mary Plumb

“An early version of “Jupiter Meets Uranus”, Anne Whitaker’s first book, originally appeared as a series of articles in Considerations magazine in 1999-2000, soon after the last conjunction of the two planets in 1997. The author has continued her research on the 14-year cycle, which is especially relevant now as Jupiter and Uranus conjoin at 0 deg Aries in June 2010.

Charles Harvey was an important mentor of hers, and she refers to his work with historical cycles. She includes examples from 1500 to 2000 CE, because  ‘the Jupiter-Uranus planetary duo has been very much present at peak points in the never-ending process of human development and discovery.’

Although the author writes about the myths associated with the planets(e.g she appreciates Richard Tarnas’s association of Prometheus with Uranus), Whitaker’s book is primarily a record of her research into the cycles of the two planets, with special attention to their most recent conjunction in 1997. She has documented the events of the times, both on the collective level ( remember Dolly the cloned sheep?) and as personal stories and ongoing follow-up in the lives of her 17 research subjects. There are mundane charts for the conjunctions and other key events from 1609-1997 and ample discussion of what happened to her subjects. In showing the “bright face” as well as the “dark face” of the planets’ combination, Whitaker offers a timely record of an important planetary cycle in action”.

Back to the future! Jupiter meets Uranus meets YOU, from 1997 to 2010/11 ….

In considering the possible impact of the upcoming 2010/11 Jupiter Uranus conjunctions in Aries and Pisces, I have already set out some reflections on what the collective impact of the conjunctions might bring, in  AFA Interview: Jupiter, Uranus and the Purple People from Planet Zog and the short extract from that interview : upcoming Jupiter-Uranus conjunctions in Pisces and Aries in 2010/11.

Now feels like the time to begin wondering what the upcoming conjunction may mean for individuals.

I thought it might be useful first of all to set a context of  looking back in order to look forward. This set of three articles should help readers gain some perspective on what may lie ahead, first of all by taking advantage of the research I did for the last Jupiter/Uranus event.

In 1996 I became sufficiently obsessed with the upcoming 1997 Jupiter/Uranus conjunction at 6 deg Aquarius to begin collecting research subjects willing to share their life experiences with me, gathering 17 subjects, nine of whom stayed right through to the end of the study. The research period I set was from January 1997 to the end of 2001, in order to  observe the full impact of the whole Jupiter/Uranus period of influence, including the three transits of Neptune across 6 deg Aquarius (where Jupiter and Uranus met in mid-February 1997) from Spring 1999 to Winter 2001. I wanted as part of the study to test out a claim of astrologers that major planetary meetings potentise thereafter the degree/s of the zodiac at which they meet. (According to my research, they do!)

The research became a book, “Jupiter Meets Uranus”, which was published by the American Federation of Astrologers in April 2009.

All of my research subjects reported significant inner and outer life shifts, to a greater or lesser degree. For me, this was one of the big surprises of the research. But we are dealing with Uranus here, amplified by Jupiter. Shock and surprise is the name of this game. To quote one of the participants:

“A phenomenally significant year with most significant relationships sustaining great changes for the better,

but very painful and turbulent times…..”

1997 Jupiter/Uranus conjunction - set on Natural Zodiac

1997 Jupiter/Uranus conjunction - set on Natural Zodiac

This was Georgia, summing up the essence of her life changes in 1997, when the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction of 6 degrees Aquarius zapped her Venus. One of several big relationship surprises was motherhood – she had thought she could never have a child, regarded when he arrived as ‘a medical miracle’.

Those of my readers with any planets, Angles or Nodes linked in with the early degrees of the Cardinal Cross will be wondering more than most (not without a certain amount of nail-biting….!) what shocks and surprises await them, since the first hit of the 2010 Jupiter/Uranus conjunction, on 8 June 2010, falls at 0 deg Aries. I can certainly include myself here in the ranks of the nail-munching wonderers: with a Tenth House Mars at 1.5 Cancer, I shall certainly be zapped by that Jupiter/Uranus lightning bolt myself….

8.6.10 Jupiter/Uranus conjunction - set on Natural Zodiac

8.6.10 Jupiter/Uranus conjunction - set on Natural Zodiac

I should stress at this point that I can only provide a general picture here. Uranus is always left field, and if you posit seventeen possible outcomes from a specific planetary pattern involving this planet, it is the eighteenth which will leap out at you from behind an unnoticed bush.

I should know!

Busily observing my research subjects’ lives, I forgot to notice  that I, too, was plugged into the research with the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction falling on my Sixth House cusp, squaring Second House Chiron at 4.5 deg Scorpio. At the end of 2001 and the research period, I collapsed with severe exhaustion and burnout after a year-long family crisis, and had to give up a successful career. (There were long-term Neptune and Saturn/Pluto transits backing up the Jupiter/Uranus pattern) However, I read stacks of books whilst getting the longest rest of my life (2002-8), wrote two books of my own including the research study published last year, and was able to change the balance of my whole life for the better.

So  – broad brush strokes work best with Uranus transits, in my view. If you can predict Uranus exactly, it isn’t Uranus!

You can take your individual horoscope along to your trusted local astrologer, and she/he will reflect with you in detail on the particular dynamics of  your chart in relation to the upcoming pattern.

The next article will  feature some colourful extracts from the lives of my research subjects. Do you have the Sun, or Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, your Angles or Nodes poised to receive the impact of the 0 deg Aries first hit in June 2010? I had five subjects whose Sun was triggered by Jupiter/Uranus. There were three Venus people, including Georgia, quoted earlier. Four Jupiter Return people, of whom  the two youngest dropped out. Two Saturn people. One Chiron person. One MC/IC person. And three North Node people. Read about the Jupiter/Uranus impact on both their inner and outer lives, and gain some idea of  what, in broad terms, this dynamic set of planets may bring your way.

The third article will explore the Cardinal backdrop to the 2010 0 Aries phase of the conjunction and its complex attendant pattern, again from the point of view of individual lives. It will also spend some time on the 14-year Jupiter/Uranus cycle, exploring its powerful, disruptive impact. The more strongly highlighted Jupiter/Uranus energy is in your horoscope, the more influential this cycle was, is and will be.Where were you in 1997/8? What life changes did you experience? In 1983? In 1968/9? In 1954/5? In 1941? In 1927/8 (the last time the conjunction occurred in Aries)?

I hope, in subsequent articles over the next couple of years, to present some real life feedback: how did the 2010/11 Jupiter/Uranus conjunction affect YOU? If there is sufficient response I will then publish YOUR stories anonymously on this site – but only with your permission. In this way, we will be contributing through our empirical observations, to the overall body of  astrological knowledge. This process of observation and recording has been going on for at least six millennia….

Latest review of “Jupiter Meets Uranus”…. from Dawn Bodrogi at The Inner Wheel….

Undoubtedly for me one of the the finest astrological discoveries of 2009 was a new blog called The Inner Wheel by accomplished and experienced astrologer and writer Dawn Bodrogi. I read through her site’s extensive book list last autumn, and emailed her on discovering that I either owned or had read every single book on that list! Thus began a fruitful exchange and a new astrological friendship which I very much hope will continue. At the end of 2009 she read my newly published book “Jupiter Meets Uranus”. Two days ago, feeling rather gloomy because a bout of tendonitis is restricting my writing capacity and time, I  was immensely cheered up by finding a terrific writeup of my book on her site! Here are some extracts from what she wrote – to read her post in full, and be enticed by more of Dawn’s excellent writing, follow the link at the foot of this post. Over to you, Dawn….

Jupiter meets Uranus

“….in order to give more exposure to good astrological writing and to spread the word about what’s available out there, from time to time I’m going to feature a book that I think is well worth the read for people who are impassioned about astrology, its history, and its future direction. These aren’t book reviews, per se, but I will be pointing out the worthwhile and interesting books that contribute in some way to astrological knowledge. In short, books that help us to think astrologically, and therefore make us better astrologers. Worth a look for that alone.

I’m pleased to say that the first featured book is Jupiter Meets Uranus, by Anne Whitaker. Anne is an astrologer and writer living in Scotland, and is a graduate of The Centre for Psychological Astrology in London, the astrology school Liz Greene founded with Howard Sassportas. Her blog, Writing from the Twelfth House, is always a great read, and full of interesting diversions. I recommend her posts about her own paranormal experiences, to be found serialised on her new blog “Wisps from the Dazzling Darkness”.

Jupiter and Uranus form a conjunction every 14 years. What happens when the planet of higher learning, adventure and exploration joins forces with the revolutionary spaceman? Well, Anne Whitaker decided to do her own exploring. The answers are not unexpected, but surprising in their accuracy and timing. What happened under a Jupiter/Uranus banner? Ponce de Leon discovered the “New World.” Mary Shelley published the story of Frankenstein (still a cautionary tale for our times), a man walked on the Moon and Dolly the Sheep was cloned. And that’s only for a start.

Anne’s book takes us through the Jupiter/Uranus high points (and inevitable low points) in history, and the chapters read like a novel. Her scholarship is first rate, and her observations insightful. The book is well worth a read simply for her descriptions of Jupiter and Uranus, and the introduction (do not skip) takes us on a journey through the mythology of each planet. …When you get to the end of this book, you will feel that you know both Jupiter and Uranus a lot more intimately, and will understand more clearly their function in a chart.

.... If you aren’t normally a reader of general astrology books, this one is a good place to start. The first thing you notice when you read the book is how good the writing is…. Anne’s book is lively, clear, often funny, and her enthusiasm for her subject jumps off the page. Whether you enjoy seeing the correlations between astrological aspects and history, or you simply wish to understand how the combined energy of two more remote planets can merge to move us all forward via sharp collective shocks, pick up this book. At the end of it, you’ll be a better astrologer than you were when you entered it, and I can’t give a higher recommendation than that…..”

Preparing for 2010/11: Prometheus unbound?

Astrology is a double-edged art.

It bestows the inestimably joyful gift of awareness that we are all woven into some vast, meaningful pattern – in which the tiniest of individual threads ( you, me….) is a key part of the weave. It contributes a significant lens to the many through which we limited humans  attempt to expand our vision and comprehension of both the collective and individual patterns of life on this tiny, precious planet of ours.

Astrology can also raise fear and apprehension: it provides very accurate timings so that we can know exactly when certain energy patterns are coming to their peak. But our attempts at predicting precisely how those energies will manifest – both collectively and individually – have ranged historically from considerable accuracy to being way off the mark. As a critic wryly observed not long ago, if astrologers could consistently predict accurately they would all be millionaires by now.

The myth of Prometheus, who stole the gods’ fire in order to use it for humanity’s enlightenment and was savagely punished for his hubris, is a salutary one to contemplate as we think of astrology’s double edge. Fire warms us, lights up the dark, protects us – but it can also burn the hand that bears it. All illuminating knowledge, everything which takes humans a step forward into the light, also casts a dark shadow.

And here we are, as another year and decade end, contemplating one of the astrological calendar’s most dynamic and exciting cycles. The fourteen-year cycle of Jupiter and Uranus, which last took place at 5-6 degrees of Aquarius in February 1997, is coming to an end. The new one zaps zero degrees Aries with its lightning bolt in June 2010.

And the myth of Prometheus, powerfully connected to the planet Uranus,  becomes once again startlingly relevant.

Prometheus

Prometheus

In my new book “Jupiter meets Uranus: from erotic bathing to star gazingpublished by the American Federation of Astrologers, (April 2009) the results of my extensive research project conducted during the 1997 Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in Aquarius are revealed.

The research includes both mundane events and the conjunction’s effects in individual lives, as I explain in AFA Interview: Jupiter, Uranus and the Purple People from Planet Zog first published in May 2009 by the AFA Newsletter.

I also offer insights into the upcoming Jupiter-Uranus conjunctions in Pisces and Aries in 2010/11, an extract from that interview.

It has been terrific to see the amount of interest generated to date, both by the book and by the above articles which appeared recently as posts on this site.

Next year, I will take some time to reflect on what the upcoming conjunction may mean in essence for individuals “plugged in” to the dramatic energy field of zero degrees of Aries/Libra/Cancer/Capricorn – the cardinal cross triggered by the upcoming Jupiter/Uranus conjunction.

Now, though, I feel it is time to return to first principles, to address those thoughtful individuals who understand that grasping the core meaning of  any combination of planetary energies is a fruitful way to proceed – prior to indulging in speculation regarding what branches may grow from that core!

The following is an edited series of extracts from Chapter One: Introducing Jupiter and Uranus, taken from   “Jupiter meets Uranus: from erotic bathing to star gazing

……Jupiter and Uranus form a conjunction in the heavens  every fourteen years. Why should the prospect of such a  meeting generate excitement, and anticipation of “fresh woods and pastures new” ?  How  did astrological Jupiter and Uranus acquire their individual names and meanings? Why are their energies in combination regarded as being so dynamic, unusual, disruptive?……

Planets’ symbolic meanings to date have been derived over time from the astronomy of the planet which is linked to the name, from the mythology associated with the name of the relevant god or goddess, and from empirical observation of the links between  planets’ movements by transit  and corresponding manifestations at both an individual and collective level of earthly life.

Jupiter

Jupiter King of the Gods

Jupiter King of the Gods

Thus, from a weave of the above factors, astrological Jupiter came to be known as “the great benefic”, the planet  bringing opportunity: personal wealth, political prominence, high social position, professional success – “kingship”of various kinds as befitted mythological Jupiter’s role as king of the Olympian gods…..

Psychologically, all forms of  over-confidence, inflated sense of one’s own importance, arrogance and hubris were assigned also to the realm of Jupiter. These represent the shadow side of Jupiter’s undoubted blessings of robust faith in life’s essential value and goodness, the longing to know and to grow in wisdom, and the ability to have fun and inspire other people.

Just as Jupiter the king in Roman myth ( Zeus in Greek myth) was the law giver, so Jupiter the planetary symbol came to relate to those laws, principles, perspectives and ethics which set a context for a larger vision of life than one would have without the prompting of this powerful, fiery force of nature. In its shadow face, those dimensions become distorted into that within human nature which imagines itself to be above the law, able to annexe God to its own side, always able to justify action no matter how dire and inhumane.

The restless drive to grow, to expand, to live a life rich in meaning, to push the boundaries of knowledge and experience as far as  possible, lies at the core of astrological Jupiter. So does its shadow; restlessness which cannot and will not accept the limits set by age and time, the domain of Saturn….

Uranus

Uranus with Rings

Uranus with Rings

Uranus appeared in 1781, seriously upsetting  the orderly cosmic structure upon which astrology was predicated. William Herschel had not expected his exhaustive telescopic sweep of the heavens to yield another planet, but it did: the first to be discovered since prehistoric peoples began to scan the heavens….. The name finally settled for from Roman myth was Uranus, following the same mytho-logic which had named Jupiter, then Saturn…..

Astrologers also adopted Uranus as the new name, but there is just one problem. Empirical observation, as already noted, is the third strand in the weave of confirming a planet’s symbolic meaning. However, as Richard Tarnas points out in his masterly essay Prometheus the Awakener.there is a consensus amongst modern astrologers, based on empirical observation since its discovery, regarding the core principles associated with the  planet Uranus. However, the mythical figure most clearly evoked by those principles is not Uranus/Ouranos!

What are those core principles? Here I quote  from Tarnas:

“The clear consensus….is that the planet Uranus is empirically associated with the principle of change, rebellion, freedom, liberation, reform and revolution, and the unexpected break-up of structures; with excitement, sudden surprises, lightning-like flashes of insight, revelations and awakenings; and with intellectual brilliance, invention, creativity, originality, and individualism. In addition to the occurrence of sudden breakthroughs and liberating events, Uranus transits are linked to unpredictable and disruptive changes…Uranus is regarded as signifying the individualist, the genius, and the rebel.”

Tarnas points out that these observed qualities bear little resemblance to the mythic Uranus/Ouranos, there being nothing in his character to suggest rebellion, genius or the impulse for change….“….the mythological Ouranos not only diverges from but contradicts the meaning of the astrological Uranus.”….

It would seem from this,  that  the logic which allocated to the new planet the name of the next god in the mythical pantheon, broke down when this particular planet’s behaviour was subjected to empirical observation. It seems rather apt, given its reputation for contrariness, that the planet should be Uranus!

Which mythic figure best expresses the core principles manifested by astrological Uranus ? Tarnas links the planet clearly with Prometheus, a towering, unforgettable character from Greek myth. Prometheus was a Titan, descended from Ouranos, who rebelled against the gods, helped to overthrow the despot Kronos, tricked Zeus, and stole the divine fire of ultimate knowledge from Olympus in order to liberate humanity from the power and domination of the gods…..

Astrological Jupiter and Uranus together – the dream team ?

A first reaction to the combination of those two ‘masculine’ energies, fire and air, rulers of Sagittarius and Aquarius, tends to be positive and enthusiastic. Exploration and innovation, the quest for meaning allied with the drive for revolutionary change, are attractive facets of the human journey. What harm could come from them?

We certainly need the enthusiasm and exuberance of fire, and air’s spirit of enquiry. We need fun, adventure, learning, information and dialogue: life without them would be desperately dull and stagnant.

But deeper investigation can lead to a degree of disquiet! Again, reflecting on the Greek mythology of …. Zeus and Prometheus can help to build a picture which has dark as well as bright shading….

Prometheus had been Zeus’ ally in the Titans’ uprising against Zeus’ father Kronos. But Zeus (Jupiter in Roman myth)had a short memory for a favour, and showed no mercy towards Prometheus when the theft was discovered. He had him chained to a rock for eternity whilst a griffin pecked out his liver each night. Zeus’ harsh behaviour showed him to be  more interested in maintaining his superior position, than in sharing what the gods had for the benefit of both gods and humankind.

Prometheus at first glance appears the more enlightened and progressive of the two. Yet he displayed considerable arrogance in deciding what would benefit humanity without, presumably, consulting a few of their representatives to see what the general feeling was! In concentrating on what humanity could become, he was too far up in the airy realms of theory to think of what the repercussions of human beings having godlike powers might be. Compassion for the impact of mind-expanding theories on the lives of ordinary individual mortals was no concern of his.

There are other rather unsavoury aspects to Zeus and Prometheus which it is well to bear in mind…..

To put it bluntly, the mythology shows us that we are in the company of two archetypal figures who between them have a sweeping and bright vision of how humanity should conduct itself,  and what it can achieve. At the same time, however, they are prepared to be ideologues, hypocrites and thieves who can be motivated by greed and opportunism as well as idealism in the pursuit of their vision.

Light and shadow : current times

In the West at least, we have all  benefited from advances made possible by the restless brilliance of the human mind and spirit, that precious gift of divine fire symbolised in myth. The rapid development of our scientific and technological knowledge and expertise from the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century onwards has been particularly stunning.  Interestingly, these advances greatly escalated from the appearance to our view of the planet named Uranus in the revolutionary decade of the 1780s,during a time known in Europe as the Enlightenment.

But  the shadow side of that gift is becoming increasingly evident as our Earth becomes more and more obviously damaged by our drive to better ourselves. Further dangers now loom as our expertise in genetic engineering and cloning technology grows. We are increasingly able to take apart the very fabric of life, and weave it to a highly conjectural new pattern  unknowable in its ultimate results…..

I do hope that this edited extract has two effects!

One, to enable the reflective reader to gain a clearer core picture of  the combined planetary energies involved as the Jupiter/Uranus energy field of 2010/11 takes form. (Using a wide 10 degree orb, the conjunction begins to apply in March 2010,  finally separating in March 2011)

And two, to stimulate interest in

Jupiter conjunct Uranus: a few thoughts on the 2010/11 encounter

In her new book “Jupiter meets Uranus: from erotic bathing to star gazing” published by the American Federation of Astrologers, (April 2009) Scottish astrologer Anne Whitaker reveals the results of her extensive research project conducted during the 1997 Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in Aquarius.

Her research includes mundane events and the conjunction’s effects in individual lives, as she explains in AFA Interview: Jupiter, Uranus and the Purple People from Planet Zog first published in May 2009 by the AFA Newsletter.

Anne also offers insights into the upcoming Jupiter-Uranus conjunctions in Pisces and Aries in 2010/11, featured in this post as an extract from that interview:

AFA: Do you see Jupiter-Uranus as positive or negative change, or does it represent something else?

AW: Without the unimaginably destructive act of creation, the Big Bang, which as far as we can surmise began our universe, we would not be here to observe our world’s wonders as well as its terrors. Positive and negative energies are two sides of the same coin, wherever we look. I hope I have conveyed that unity adequately in ‘Jupiter Meets Uranus’.

Jupiter meets Uranus makes lightning!

Jupiter meets Uranus makes lightning!

AFA: What can we expect in general terms from the upcoming 2010/11  Jupiter-Uranus conjunctions in Aries and Pisces?

AW: in essence, the unexpected! And this question needs a whole article, not a few brief paragraphs. The Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in Pisces-Aries-Pisces comes into orb (10 degrees) at the end of March 2010, and separates (10 degree orb) in mid-March 2011. Fasten your seat belts! The human community and probably the natural world are in for a bumpy ride.

This Jupiter-Uranus conjunction will arrive at a turbulent point: joining the last Saturn-Pluto square since its conjunction of the early 1980s, and amplifying the first Uranus-Pluto square from its conjunction which dominated the 1960s: that decade of the Vietnam war and its protesters, political assassinations, women’s liberation, musical revolution and the beginning of the micro-technology metamorphosis which has utterly changed our world in only a few decades.

In common with the 1997 conjunction that linked in an astonishing bowl shape with Mars, Saturn and Pluto (Jupiter Meets Uranus, p. 40), this will be no “ordinary” Jupiter-Uranus event: Jupiter conjunct Uranus at 0 Aries will form a T-cross with Saturn at 28 Virgo and Pluto at 4 Capricorn. Mars at 1 Virgo will trine Pluto, opposes Neptune and link back to quincunx the Aries Jupiter-Uranus conjunction.

The Jupiter-Uranus predilection for seeing no limits, leaping before it looks and challenging the established order expressed through the filter of the rash, angry impetuousness of Aries and locked with the harsh, power-driven determination not to budge of the Saturn-Pluto square, offers a difficult and dangerous picture in the realm of international politics, for instance. Misuse of technology by angry, militant fanatics convinced they have God on their side and that the old order must be overturned, is a picture which arises from this.

We can also await more disruption and turbulence on the economic front, but I leave further speculation on this issue to those much better qualified to comment than I!

Religion is not going to diminish in impact; the Piscean backdrop to much of the conjunction will see to that. We may well see an inspirational “messiah”-type figure emerge with challenging and disruptive effect socially and politically in the Aries phase.

(NOTE: 19.9.10: little did I think (it being Uranus of whom we speak) that we would have an ‘anti-messiah’, that self-styled High Priest of the Militant Atheism persuasion, Richard Dawkins, and his plan to arrest the Pope, during 2010….) ( ….and  Autumn/Winter 2010….Julian Assange, anyone? The “messiah” of  uncensored openness?)

Also suggested is fiery eruption disrupting the very fabric of the Earth itself. On a more positive note, the urgency of the accelerating environmental crisis may give birth to great leaps forward in the pioneering of new technologies, e.g., for harnessing solar power and reducing environmental damage.

The challenging pattern I have described, set against the cardinal backdrop of the natural zodiac (which I used for most of the Jupiter Uranus conjunction charts in the book) also links in with the Super Galactic Centre, currently at around 0 degrees Libra.

A picture arises from this of major scientific breakthroughs in our understanding of the Universe or Multiverse, of which our tiny solar system is a mere blip of ephemeral matter. Perhaps the CERN Large Hadron Collider will work this time, and we’ll find the Higgs Boson particle at last . . . or maybe it really will blow us all to bits! There is a most interesting article bringing the CERN particle accelerator and the Super Galactic Centre together, at http://cerncourier.com/cws/article/cern/29853. Check it out!

AFA: Do you have a particular area of interest where you expect the 2010 conjunction to deliver, as it were?

AW: One of my own special interests is in genetics and cloning. The 1969 conjunction in Libra saw a Harvard medical school team identify the first gene (see p. 93 of Jupiter Meets Uranus). The year after the 1983 conjunction in Sagittarius, a British scientist developed genetic fingerprinting (p. 93). In 1997 with the Aquarian conjunction, we had the announcement of the first cloned animal, Dolly (p. 43).

The conjunction in Aries in 2010 suggests the next stage, which could well be human cloning, currently illegal where the creation of a complete human is concerned. Maybe a defiant, pioneering male doctor/scientist is prepared to pit himself against the established order and rule of law to do so? There are “maverick doctor” rumblings in the press about this already. . . .

AFA: Do you have a special wish for the human community for something uniquely helpful which could emerge from this powerful and disruptive energy field?

AW: Yes. I would love to see science fiction fantasies over many decades become fact with the arrival on Planet Earth of small but fabulously evolved purple people from Planet Zog to teach us how to mend our ways. Now THAT would be unexpected!!

Jupiter/Uranus meets “the Mutable Babe from Hell”!

The backdrop to the remarkable planetary line-up of 16th February 1997, centred on the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction at 5 deg.55′ Aquarius, was the approaching shift of Neptune into Aquarius, one of its major themes being the yearning for a more humane, spiritual sense of connectedness as world citizens. We could perceive the atmosphere of this shift pervading the global response to UK Princess Diana’s death and funeral in the autumn of 1997.

The unique group experience described in this book extract, for which Lucia’s creativity was such a potent catalyst in that same autumn, was a smaller scale manifestation of  the same collective theme:

(An account of the experiences of all 17 research subjects featured in my study of the February 1997 Jupiter/Uranus conjunction can be found in Chapters 6, 7 and Appendix iii of “Jupiter meets Uranus: from erotic bathing to star gazing”.)

Bridging the personal and the collective

Lucia

Lucia

Lucia

During the period of 13th-15th October 1997, Uranus turned direct at 5 deg. Aquarius – where Jupiter and Uranus had met in February 1997. In response to my asking the 17 research subjects featured in my study whether 13th-15th October had been of any significance, Lucia’s response was to write TOTALLY AND UTTERLY, doubly underlined.

Her horoscope shows a very prominent angular Jupiter-Uranus opposition, in T Square with a Sun Mercury conjunction in Sagittarius, conjunct the IC which is also in Sagittarius. The transiting Jupiter-Uranus conjunction of 16th February 1997 fell on her natal Saturn in the fifth house, activating a powerful natal configuration also involvingJupiter and Uranus. Moreover, of  all the participants, her horoscope shows her natally to be more strongly “plugged in” to the outer planets than anyone else, with her 12th house Uranus rising in 5 degrees Virgo, predisposing her toward tapping very powerfully into the prevailing collective energies.

Her friends call her “the mutable babe from hell” . She positively crackles with barely contained energy, and has a mass of black snaky hair. She is a freelance choreographer and dance teacher. Here is her account of her extraordinary experience in her own words.

I was sent away on Monday 13th October 1997 to a remote and very beautiful spot  in the North of Scotland with forty five unruly teenagers from deprived backgrounds, to create a piece of theatre and enrich their lives. “What a hideous prospect” I thought at first – but what actually evolved was completely mind blowing!!!  I had no idea what to do with them so I threw the whole thing open to discussion , and here’s what happened….”

(Background : the majority of the kids involved were not arty-farty privileged West enders. They had little or no experience of dance, drama or music or how to present themselves positively in a life context, never mind a theatrical one !)

However, I never baulk at a challenge and, while this seemed like a mammoth task, I felt I could contribute something valuable. The heading for the week was “Putting young people first” so I posed the following questions:

a) What does the title mean to you ?

( It certainly wasn’t providing ME with any creative inspiration!)

Responses varied, but the outcome was generally the same; they felt under pressure always to be the best, to think of me…me…me…stifled in their self-expression, not allowed to be who they wanted.

b) What do you really want from life ?

“To be happy” was the universal response, which surprised me with a group of 14 -17 year olds. I had expected   “Money, money and more money.” Many talked of finding a partner, marrying, settling down, having children. Working together, being part of a harmonious whole, appeared very  important.

c) What do you daydream about ?

I encouraged them to think really expansively to get us off the “being famous” crap and interesting things started to
happen: being free, being able to fly, climbing Everest, being able to see into the future. Fantasy took off…

THEN IT STRUCK ME!!

I’d been dying to bring my astrology into a piece of theatre and it seemed like the Sun, Venus and Neptune were now jumping off the page at me. I had all the inspiration I needed and I set to work. Everyone was soon busying away on improvisation, song writing, creating movement and I was on  a total high.

The whole week, instead of becoming more frenetic, as I would expect, became calmer. I can’t describe it in words; but it was as though we were all tuning into this kind of “community” thing. We were by the sea, and I watched as real hardened city kids went to the water’s edge each day and sat, saying nothing, gazing into space beside new-found friends. I stood outside one evening, gazing at the magnificent sky and stars, when I was joined by an archetypal “wee hard man” who stood silently for a few moments then said “What’s happening, Lucia?” “Who knows. Enjoying yourself, Dave ?” “It’s pure brilliant, by the way,” he nodded quietly.

The unspoken communication was the most incredible thing we were all experiencing.

These are very noisy and rumbustious young people, yet they were walking around as though they were on tranquillisers. A small group approached and asked me if I would teach them how to meditate!!!

There was a whole higher consciousness, Neptunian thing going on here and I will never, ever forget it. Spiritual connection, I guess.

I told no-one where I had drawn my inspiration from until the piece was finished because I fully expected people to think I was a fruitcake. I sat everyone down at the end, explained my planetary springboard, and waited for the guffaws. They didn’t happen. They replied in a very sixties “Wow, man!!” kind of way. Unbelievable!

(On Friday 17th October at 3.17 pm , precisely when the young people finished performing the work they had spent the week creating, the clock  in the  room stopped. )

The piece called Mind, Body, Spirit was performed on 30th October 1997 at the City Halls, Glasgow, in Scotland… “I really, really hope I’ve been instrumental in expanding at least a few young minds.”

Lucia’s experience shows how vibrantly and creatively Jupiter and Uranus can work together at their best, to push human beings beyond what they thought were their limits toward creating new and satisfying ways of being alive. It reminds us, in its Aquarian context, that we are all interrelated.

Also illustrated, in a particularly striking manner, is an important truth which I believe the research in this study has helped to confirm in its own small scale: that the personal and collective lives of humankind respond in the same core way to the great music of the spheres,  played throughout space and time by the planets in their cycles.
